Rope Access Techniques
Rope access technology is perhaps better known as industrial climbing. It is a method that gives
technical personnel a more rapid access to places that are hard to reach, in order for them to per-
form their work.

The methods being used within rope-access technology are taken from conventional mountain clim-
bing and spelunking (cave climbing). The methods have then been developed to satisfy laws and
regulations that apply to onshore and offshore based industry. After presentation on the market,
the demand for rope-access technology has increased significantly in recent years. Rope-access
technology may today be used by all disciplines and trades. All kinds of jobs at height and in places
difficult to access can be performed by means of rope-access technology.
Next to being a safe and efficient work method it is also cost saving. On some projects costs have
been reduced by as much as 80% compared to other methods, such as scaffolding, lifts etc.
The majority of companies are trying to reduce costs as much as possible. Many companies there-
fore see the advantage of using rope-access technology.
Areas of application
Rope access technology is very useful and may be applied almost anywhere. There are very few limi-
tations as to what may be performed by means of rope-access technology.
Rope access technology is currently being used in the following areas:
Oil platforms and rigs
Offshore and shipping yards
Construction industry
High-rise buildings
Rock protection
Examples of work operations that can be carried out by means of rope-access technology:
Control of lifting equipment. Inspection (Visual, NDT, video). Surface treatment, hull inspection and
replacing anodes on rigs. Mechanical work, welding, tubing, fire protection, protection housing,
hydraulics, electric plants etc. Installation and dismantling of
antennas, cable trays, signs, monorail beams, truss, cladding, derricks.
Avalanches and avalanche protection. Rock protection and bolting to prevent avalanches, and sur-
veys of relevant areas.
